Too soon?

Each time we travel, to whichever country we travel, we try to be courteous enough to learn a few basic words and phrases that we can use with the people we interact with during each day.  Important things like:

Hello.
Good bye.
Thank you.
Where is the bathroom?
I’ll have the wine.
More wine, please.
Keep the wine coming, don’t be so stingy.

Of course, my husband isn’t so good with accents, so no matter how many times we have him repeat certain phrases, they still are delivered with the Texas accent of Sandy the Squirrel from SpongeBob.  And he has never even been to Texas.

The fun part of trying to speak Italian is that the Italian language is spoken with such gusto – some much inflection and enthusiasm – that it just makes you happy.  It takes a boring, “prego” to an enthusiastically delivered, “prE-go!!”  (be sure you roll that ‘r’ when you say it in your head).

We soon found ourselves saying “grazie” quite frequently.  It’s fun!  Say it now: grazie!  Be sure to roll the ‘r’, and say it loud.  Of course, every time you say “grazie!” you are met with an equally exuberant, “prEgo!”.

One night at dinner, after the waiter had poured his water, my husband responded, “Grazie!”… or did he?   The kids giggled.  I started to listen more closely.  Soon the waiter brought us bread, and this time I heard it clearly.  My husband responded, “Yahtzee!”, to which the waiter replied, “prEgo!”.   More snickering from the peanut gallery.

The next time the waiter came back, it happened again.  “Yahtzee!”…”PrEgo!”   My squishy son slithered under the table in laughter.

Now we were all just waiting for the waiter to return.  Every time he did, someone else gave an enthusiastic, “Yahtzee!”, to be met with, “PrEgo!”.

Later, my teen son got a refill on his Coke Zero.  When the waiter brought it, my son enthusiastically thanked him with, “Nazi!”.  …. and “PrEgo!” from the waiter.  We were momentarily silent.  Nazi??  Is that even allowed to be funny?  Is it too soon?

My teen daughter spewed her water all over the table, and we all erupted in laughter.

Is there EVER a too soon?

Intro to Italy

It’s time to review our Italian Family Vacation.  Let me preface this with: our vacations are NEVER dull.  They usually contain at least one sick child/trip to the ER, and one major catastrophe.  It has gotten to the point where we just expect these things and now it’s just funny, no matter how bad.  I believe it’s called “delusional”.  Plus, our vacations also always contain some amazing new places, and incredible memories.  (granted, disasters do tend to stay in one’s mind).

Fortunately, there were no trips to the ER this time.  This time.  I could write multiple blogs about past ER vacations.  As our pediatrician says, “I wish you people would just stay home”.

We actually did some fantastic things that I will write about in separate blog entries.  We travel frequently, and I love to tell about any great things we do, so others can go do them as well.

I also like to take pictures.  Lots and lots of pictures.  Multitudes. Bunches.  Hoards. An abundance. Volumes.  Heaps.  Masses.  A plethora.  Are you getting the picture? (pun intended) (stop groaning)

Sadly, I am nowhere near the photographer I would like to be.  I have expensive cameras, expensive lenses, and the best of everything.  The one thing I do not have is skill.  Or knowledge.  I TRY.  I really do.  I have had several “lessons” from experienced friends who take magnificent pictures.   None of it seems to sink in.  On the off chance I do get some decent photos, it’s a fluke.  But that doesn’t stop me from taking thousands on every vacation, much to my family’s dismay.

Of course, once we get home I have to upload these thousands of pictures.  And rotate them.  And crop them.  And delete the bad ones, of which there are many.  And once that is done… what am I supposed to do with them?  Why, share them with my friends on Facebook, of course!  And then watch my friend count drop…rapidly.

Over the next week or so I’ll give you the full low-down on the trip – the good, the bad, and the hysterical.  But for now, I leave you with these stellar works of art.

My First Blog Giveaway

Home sweet home. We made it back from Italy, although I am still recovering from jet-lag and missing my sulfite free Red Wines. (You can expect a full report on that later this week)
Italy, even with its highs and lows (more stories for later in the week) is fantastico ( I have no idea if that’s an Italian word, but I find that if you say it with gusto, it sounds Italian). If you don’t have a passport, GET ONE. Start making your plans, saving your moolah, and no matter what your children’s ages are, go for it!

As always, my camera came with me. I tried my best to take fancy photos. The kind I could have enlarged above my master King suite bed. We will see what comes out of the camera, still need to download a bajillion photos.  My hopes are usually better than the results.

In the mean time, I was able to join an awesome group of bloggers for my very first GIVEAWAY! (They like me, they really do like me!)
One lucky winner will receive a $500 gift card to B&H Photo, Video & Pro Audio or a $250 gift card to Kelly Moore Bags!

Pope on a Rope

Rome is filled with Bangladeshi (is that even the right word?) street vendors. One right after the other they line the streets, all selling the exact same products.  The exact. same. products.  Standing no more than three feet apart from each other.  How they ever make any money is a complete mystery, especially since most of their items are complete garbage.

One item, however, caught my eye.

The Pope bobble head.

I mean seriously, what could be a better souvenir from Rome than a freaking Pope bobble head!?

ME: I have to have a Pope bobble head.

HUSBAND: Why on earth would you want that?

ME: Because it’s awesome. Duh.

HUSBAND: No, it’s not.  It’s just something you’re going to make me carry around.

ME: I never make you carry things around!

HUSBAND: *twists shoulder to show me my camera bag he is carrying*

ME: I will definitely carry my own Pope.

HUSBAND:  You’re not getting a Pope.

My Pope that my husband carried around all day.

My Pope that my husband carried around all day.

Professional discretion

Today I woke up with the fourth cold sore I’ve had in my entire life.  As we were wandering Rome I saw a pharmacy, and decided to step in to see if they had anything for it.  It was a little crowded so I waited my turn until the pharmacist motioned for me.

ME: *in a hushed tone* Do you have anything for a cold sore? *pointing to my lip*

PHARMACIST: *loudly* You mean, for the herpes???

ME: *dies of embarrassment*

Roman Holiday: My Family Style

When one thinks “Glamorous Italian Vacation”, one gets a certain picture in their mind.  I guarantee you, it’s nothing like the actual picture of my family on vacation. We are way more Griswold than Audrey Hepburn.

Case in point: today I signed us up for a Segway tour of historic Rome. It was something different, and  I thought the kids would really like it.  I’m always trying to find unique things to do with the kids that still gets them to see all of the important sights.

I was right.  It was easy to do, even for the small squishy one. Several companies had turned me away because they felt he wasn’t old enough or big enough, but Rex Tours was willing to give him a chance, with the caveat that if he wasn’t able to handle it on his own, he wouldn’t be able to go.   We shouldn’t have worried.  He was a natural.  I, on the other hand………

Our guide, Leo, was very specific with certain instructions, such as “don’t try to get on the Segway by yourself”.  Of course he was referring to the kids, not me.  I am very capable and self sufficient. So, after our stop at Circus Maximus, I decided to be more efficient and hop on all on my own while he helped the kids.  The moment I stepped on it, it began to jerk forward. And then backward. And then spin in a circle.  It was during the spin cycle that I tried to step off.   BIG mistake. I launched backward, to (thankfully) be caught by Leo before I hit the pavement.   I wasn’t hurt, (except my pride), but there was one wee (pun intended) problem- during the course of my spinning, I had (inadvertently) …uhh…peed.  Not a lot, but enough to make me uncomfortable.  And really, isn’t any amount of unintended pee, no matter how small, too much?

Of course, when Leo asked me if I was okay I brightly answered, “I’m fine!”  What was I going to say?  “I’m fine except I seem to have wet myself”?  “I’m fine if you don’t count the pee running down my leg”?

The rest of the tour all I could think of was how uncomfortable I was, and whether or not anyone could tell I had peed.  Isn’t middle age FUN?

I'm obviously a natural. Look at that form!

My Glamorous Italian Life: Update two

The small squishy one had been lamenting our lack of train travel.  Looks like he is getting his wish.

Glamorous Italian Life: Update

The glamour of Italy continues.  Does anyone know how to say “transmission” in Italian?

We get to ride in the car ON the tow truck?!

This face is not helping my anxiety level.

Oh wait…I get to ride with the driver!

The glamour of travel

Not everything is glamorous in Italy.  Take a brief pause from wanting to seal me up in a wine cask and remember, even in Italy,  one must do laundry.

When in Rome...do laundry.

When in Rome…do laundry.
